Recently, I had the pleasure of attending the University of Oklahoma’s Economic Development Institute (EDI). The EDI is structured to provide economic development professionals exposure to, and reinforcement of, the tools and relationships needed to enhance their ability and effectiveness in facilitating economic growth and opportunity in their communities. Completing the Institute qualifies professionals to sit for the coveted IEDC Economic Development industry certification.

The Institute created the space for attendees to discuss strategies and share policies with their economic development peers from across the country.  From topics such as attracting private investment to supporting entrepreneurship and workforce development, the week underscored the need for engaged collaboration between the private and public sectors to facilitate job creation to enhance quality of life for our communities.

It was fitting that the 2024 EDI Institute preceded National Economic Development Week, which was May 6-10th. This celebration underscores how the collaboration of businesses, government agencies, and community stakeholders can positively create economic prosperity. Economic Development Week marks one of the most significant opportunities to highlight and celebrate the vital role economic development plays in building vibrant communities and fostering sustainable growth.

Final Thoughts

Economic Development is a core discipline that intersects with the public and private sectors to facilitate investment, job creation, place making and improving quality of life to build and augment thriving communities.  Congratulations to those who completed the EDI program and for investing in yourselves!  It was great to be with each of you – keep building strong, cohesive communities and providing opportunity for all!
